Coldest I've ridden in.

Postby Triangles » Thu Jan 31, 2019 11:25 am

So this morning was the coldest weather I've ever ridden in. It was -10F and I have a bout a 7.5 mile commute. I probably couldn't have gone much farther due to my double wall snowmobile visor starting to frost over from my breath and my fingers were starting to get cold. She hasn't been ridden since October so I'm not sure if she was complaining due to a gummed up carb from sitting or was just complaining about the cold.

It was probably a combination of the cold and 'old fuel'. I'm happy for you to brave such conditions.

My personal 'best' was 150 miles starting at 12F in the morning and 'warming' to 22F by the afternoon. It was a beautiful sunny and calm day. January 1, 2018.

WOW that's pretty hardcore! I used to have a 30 mile commute and I had figured out how to keep warm except my hands. What do you use to keep your fingers from freezing? My Olympia Gortex gloves are only good for 30 miles or less depending on the temperature.

My gloves are First Manufacturing Gortex lined gauntlet gloves and are quite bulky. But keep my hands warm enough. I also use various methods to keep the wind off my hands and use hot packs. A Widder electric vest helps a keep my core warm.
My feet are my current limiting item. I feel that if I can do something to keep the wind off of them I could go much longer.

I've tried some Oxford handlebar muffs but they don't work well with the Vulcan 500 LTD's handlebar geometry. Probably even worse on an EN500A. Also I had issues with the freeway wind activating the clutch lever

FWIW I've got Bates GX8 gortex waterproof composite toe boots. With just regular socks my feet have never gotten cold.
