Regarding the Vulcan 800 and freeplay at the steering tube

Postby Stubbie45 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 2:27 pm

Older son has an 800 cc Kawasaki Vulcan. He has mentioned to me multiple times that it feels as if he has free play at the steering neck. Most often evident when braking. Seems that the front fork assembly tends move backwards during braking and back when the front brakes are released.
Is there an adjustment on these cycles to manually adjust the preload on the steering bearings or are these items to be replaced as a wear item??
Thanks in advance!

I've never had to mess with this but from what I've read you have to get the front wheel off the ground, loosen a bunch of stuff and use a special wrench to adjust the adjust the bearing adjusting nut. So yes there is adjustment that you will likely need special tools to do. I'd imagine that if it's been loose for a while it's possible the bearings may have been damaged and may need to be replaced. From a safety standpoint I'd get a manual to make sure it is done right or have a shop do it for me.
