I have a 93 model 500 vulcan and Im looking to not buy the Kaw. verson. Any cheap filters fit? Also anyone ever put pods on the 500 vulcan? If so does it need bigger jets.

only aftermarket i'm aware of is K&N. I don't think it really makes any difference over stock. My personal experience with pods is they're not worth the hassle unless your airbox is broken and you can fix/find a replacement.

Well, unless the filter is damaged, you can usually clean it, let it dry out and re-install it a few times before it's toast. I usually have one in the bike and one I've cleaned and dried on the shelf so I don't have to wait for it to dry when I need a filter change next time.
As Triangles pointed out, there's not much out there, certainly not anything I'm aware of that costs less than the Kawasaki filter.
