JT Sprockets for 17/40

Postby vagabond » Sat Jun 14, 2014 7:11 pm

I've read a lot about the advantages of the 17/40 over the stock 16/42, but when I looked up the JT rockets website that was referenced, I didn't see any parts that would match my 2004 EN500c ltd. Do these need to be jimmy-rigged and if so, which parts from JT do you guys use? I appreciate any help. First time poster but long time reader of the forums.

Pretty easy to find. All you need was to look in their catalog for the EN500C which is the vulcan 500 LTD. http://www.jtsprockets.com/catalogue/model/5338 It looks like there is now a 37T rear as an option! From my experience with a 17/38 (used ninja 500 parts to get the 38T rear), I think the 17/37 would be too all. You might try 16/37. The stock chain is 110 links. With the smaller rear sprocket you will likely have to use a 108 link chain. I did on my 17/38 setup.

Thanks. I read about your custom ninja job. And looked at the JT links you posted in the original thread, but didn't want to revive a year old thread. But, when I looked at the catalog, it only listed Law's from the 80's in 40 teeth range and I was worried it wouldn't fit. Owned my Law for a year, but finally getting into repairing it myself, and wanted to ensure I didn't do a major cock up since my supplies are limited. I found these http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=190855318247, for a 800 drifter, didn't know if they would fit on my 2004 EN500c Ltd. Would it be advantageous to consider a 16/37 over a 17/40. I'm planning on riding 5k in highway miles over the next three months. Replacing my tire and tube now when I stumbled on these forums and considered upgrading my sprockets and chains before all the travel. Cheers and thanks for all the assistance.

16/37 vs 17/40 is 2.31 vs 2.35 final drive ratio. I doubt you'd be able to see the difference. I would be concerned with a 108 link chain being too long for a 16/37 setup. I guess you don't know until you try it. IIRC burkbuilds had the 17/40 setup and I think he also used the 108 link chain. He said somewhere in one of the posts... Look on the JT sprockets site. See if they have the same bolt pattern and or check if the part numbers for the drifter are the same as the vulcan 500.
