I went with the 17/40 a couple years ago on my 2000 LTD and love it. Almost all of my riding is on highways around 60-65 MPH. I don't feel I'm lacking power and mileage increased about 5-7 MPG (55-60 now).

I still have 17/38 (Ninja rear sprocket). It's on the edge of being too tall but I still enjoy it. Had I known then what I know now I would have went with with 17/40. Riding 2 up with a headwind I top out at WOT somewhere between 75 and 80 MPH. In this scenario I drop down to 5th which is still a fuzz taller than the stock 6th gear.
