My husband encourages me to modify. He knows that it will give him leverege when he wants to add stuff to his 900 custom.
I swear... I only ride to save gas. (If you believe that I have a deal on a bridge for you.)

my wife is always asking me when i am going to stop modifying the bike and leave it alone. then she will see something she likes and be like, "hey, why dont you get this for your bike". never will understand women, maybe thats why they are so appealing.

My wife said that whenever the UPS truck stops in front of our house she asks my youngest daughter, "What do you think your father has bought for his motorcycle now?"

Burkbuilds or others,

When I'm winding mine out it likes to shift at 7500-8000 rpm in second and third gears. AT 65 mph I'm turning 5,000 rpm in 6th gear. Does this sound about right? Someone on another forum told me to have it checked because it didn't sound right shifting at that rpm in the lower gears. The guy said it sounded like I had a single fire tach hooked up to a dual fire system. Does this sound right? My feeling is the tach is reading right since they do like to rev at higher rpm's.

Thanks.

That's reasonable for a max acceleration shifting RPM. Under more normal driving circumstances, I'd be shifting quite a bit sooner than that. Without a tach it's a guess, but I suspect my normal shifting is closer to 4-5k RPM when just cruising around.

GeorgiaRider, Yes your numbers sound right.

Single fire tach's are very rare and expensive. Who ever told you that you might have a single fire tach doesn't know what they are talking about. A single fire tach would display 1/2 the actual RPM. (Single fire = 1 spark per 2 crank revolutions, Dual fire = 1 spark per crank revolution) Another thing to consider is that your tach will more accurately indicate your speed than your speedometer. For reasons unknown to me, every Japanese bike I've seen, the speedometer indicates approximately 3-7% faster than you are actually traveling. I've also been told, but never bothered to verify that the error is not necessarily linear. For example it's possible to be 3% off at 25 mph and 7% off at 75 mph or vice versa. I'm just picking random numbers for illustration, I'm not implying that the Vulcan 500 is off in this manner. Both of my 500's read about 5mph high at freeway speeds, ie speedo says 75mph but I"m actually going only 70mph. Take a look at this spreadsheet to get an idea of RPM. vs. MPH. The spreadsheet calculates 5K RPM as about 62 MPH which from your information is right where it should be.

Update. Love the tach. It's nice to be able to just glace down at the tach and know the speed you're running. No issues. Running 5,000 rpm at 65 mph.

so i noticed this post is fairly old. burk's link doesn't work anymore, but for anyone looking for a cheap tach that is pretty much the same, here's a current link.
