The new pipe arrived last Saturday. Installed it same day and now she's nice and quiet again. Didn't bother saving the old pipe. I was too pissed off at it. Hopefully this one will last at least 25,000 miles again.

Swing arm bolt failure!
I've never seen anything like this happen! An internet search came up empty too. I had just come off the freeway running 70 mph. Coming down a street with stop and go 25- speeds in a construction zone. Sitting still and heard and felt a *pop* on the bike. Because of all the construction vehicles I t...

Re: Dirt cheap air filter cleaning
The biggest complaint I see from people trying to remove the filter is that they have trouble pulling the starter solenoid out of the way. A quick squirt of WD-40 or even window cleaner on the bracket allows the rubber mount to slide off easily. Just don't be careless when moving the solenoid out o...

Re: Exhaust rattle
Well crap! Look what I just found dirt cheap on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-KAWASAKI-VULCAN-EN500-LTD-EXHAUST-SYSTEM-PIPES-AND-MUFFLERS-/251325265912?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a842737f8 At that price I would have taken a chance vs the $100.00 I just paid for the brand new...

Re: How many miles do you put on your 500?
I love my PT Cruiser to death but 20-25 mpg mileage average really sucks for a little 2.4 liter engine. On a few trips to California I did manage 29.9 mpg. Never could break that magic 30mpg barrier. In town mpg isn't much better than a 1980's Chevy pickup though. When it comes to drafting with the ...

Re: What weight oil do you use?
It does get cold here in the Phoenix winters but not long enough or cold enough to require a 5w oil. In an engine this small conventional wisdom would say a lighter weight oil would indeed give better mileage though. I don't dare try it in summer when we seem to spend most of the year at 110+ degree...

Not OEM parts from Ron Ayers or in general? This could be good info. I hate spending good money on junk.

Re: Exhaust rattle
Congrats on your new job! New jobs are hard to find now. I'm very lucky in that the new job I start next week will cut my commute in half. Less stress and mucho MORE money! It's abut FREAKING time! I love this bike so much that even if I bought something larger I'd keep her and make very few mods. O...

How many miles do you put on your 500?
I bought my used 2004 Vulcan 500 in July of 2011 purely for economic reasons. 50-60 mpg vs 20-25mpg with the car (PT Cruiser) is a no brainer. Since then I have yet to drive the car to work even once. Rain, shine or monsoon conditions I'm on the bike for the 19 mile ride each way to the tune of 20,0...

Re: What weight oil do you use?
This topic ignites such a firestorm on all the other motorcycle sites. Glad it didn't happen here. I use Shell Rotella "T" 15w40 Jaso MA spec (about $13.00 per gallon at Walmart). I once tried Valvoline "Motorcycle 15w40" for only about 200 miles and drained it out to go back to ...

Re: Exhaust rattle
Well I'm here to tell you that once the right side head pipe starts to separate it's a losing proposition to try to save it. No matter what crazy things you do to compensate for the breakage it just continues to crack for the full circumference. Mine has finally broken away completely at the upper s...

Re: Fuel supply issues?
Agreed with Triangles on all three points. Just after I got my 2004 about 2 years ago I was having starvation problems near the 100 mile mark when it was "cool" outside. After seeing a few posts on various Vulcan sites about cap venting issues I pulled my gas cap and took it apart. I found...

Re: Exhaust rattle
Well I got a little over a month before it started getting noisy again. I pulled it apart this morning to find that instead of being cracked 50% of the circumference it's now at least 75% and the screw came out. The screw fell out when I turned the muffler upside down do that was no big deal. Nothin...

Re: oil filter and drain plug torque
If you have a torque wrench then yes that's the best way but don't sweat it. Just do the oil change the same way you do on a car. I have a torque wrench but don't use it on the drain plug or the filter. I tighten the plug with a wrench until I know it's seated. I partially fill the filter then lube ...
