oil filter and drain plug torque

They charge a ridiculous amount to change oil at the dealership, but because the manual says you should not do it yourself unless you can torque the new filter and drain plug to spec, you should have it done professionally. On my cars, I've always hand tightened the filter (plus maybe a tiny bit mor...

Re: superficial metal oxidation

Thanks Triangles. Good suggestions. Your assumptions were all correct. I'm gonna just do watchful waiting on the aluminum for the time being.

superficial metal oxidation

It's been a super mild winter in Asheville, NC so I've been riding my 2008 quite a bit throughout. Today I took it out to clean everything and noticed some slight oxidation trying to come through the paint on the front fender, right around the back edge. I don't want to get into re-painting or anyth...

Re: Newbie wants to charge battery with unfamiliar charger

Thanks for the info, Triangles. The two extra connectors I mentioned are called electric accessory connectors. (When all else fails, read the manual!) There is another pair of them inside the headlight housing. Meanwhile, I used the abovementioned charger for six hours on my weak battery, having rea...

Re: Newbie wants to charge battery with unfamiliar charger

Also, are the two unused connectors near the battery for connecting a battery tender? Looks like they might be.

Wow dude, really sorry to see this. Glad your injuries weren't worse. Get back on the horse that bucked you off, they say, and it sounds like that's exactly what you did.

Newbie wants to charge battery with unfamiliar charger

Well, it's winter in North Carolina and for the first time since I bought it new, my 2008 needs a battery charge. I inherited a Schumacher 1 amp Motorcycle Battery Charger MC-1 from my late father-in-law, but there's no manual and I just wonder if somebody could advise me on using this without messi...

Re: neutral to first on startup

Ah, that's good to see those first three words in your reply. And although I've never tried to start it in first gear, I'm sure it would absolutely not start cold like that. Thanks much for the reply!

neutral to first on startup

When I start up cold, putting the bike in gear kills the engine. This is not after letting out the clutch, but immediately, with the clutch engaged. It's as though I have shifted to first without clutching. This of course feels like it is doing the transmission no good as I get a pretty bad metal-to...

Re: pulsing front brake

It's not a sound. I'm going to look at it very carefully -- I'll get help if necessary -- and figure out what is doing it, and I'll let you know. I can't imagine any way the disc could have gotten warped. I'm hoping it was something oily that got on the disc and made it slick in one spot. Theoretica...

pulsing front brake

I wonder if I could get some advice. I noticed my front brake "pulsing" when I slowly approached a stop. It was very pronounced. On quicker stops, I don't notice it. I routinely use both brakes for every stop, and I'm a pretty gentle rider -- no sudden or hard stops unless I have to. Is th...

Re: Hello from Western North Carolina

Thanks, it's good to be here and already I see it's exactly what I hoped for -- really helpful responses and interesting reading to just browse. Now, to figure out how to post a picture of my Vulcan. It's a 2008, totally stock plus some saddle bags, so nothing new to anybody, but might as well add i...

chain cleaning and lubricating

I read about a lot of products for chain lube, but I'm not seeing much about how to get the stuff onto the chain. Is it necessary to take the chain off to clean it and lube it? I've been trying to do this job on my gravel driveway with no lift or anything, and it ain't easy to say the least. In fact...

tank venting sound

It sounds like my gas tank vents through the gas cap keyhole. It took me a while to figure out what the sound was. Somewhere I think I heard some Vulcan 500's do have an issue with the vent pipe going under the seat getting pinched or something. Anybody know anything about this? It doesn't really bo...

Hello from Western North Carolina

I was new to riding when I bought my new Vulcan in summer '08. Only have about 4,000 miles on it. Have wanted a good forum where I can ask questions. This looks like it!
